On Oct. 11th, 2017 School of International Education Reading Review Competition was held successfully in the Classroom Y523 in ZhiCheng Building. The Vice Dean of SIE, Mr. Yu ZHENG attended the competition.
In this competition, altogether 15 groups of students shared their reflection on reading the books that they recommended with rich thoughts and creative forms. Based on China's national condition and quoting The Analects of Confucius, Mauritian student GIRIRAJ RADERAM and Sri Lankan student MAREETA NELLY DELYSZE OORLOFF shared their thoughts about China Dream and the significance of education after reading Animal Farm. Sri Lankan student THABREW LAHIRU ARUNA SHAN HEMACHANDRA showed us the artful game skill in the Sherlock Holmes The Last Bow and uncovered the trick secret. MAHAMENDIGE PIYALKA NAVINDIE MENDIS presented her reflection on the friendship across the social class from Madol Doova, which is a famous children book in Sri Lanka. Sri Lankan student JAYAMAHA MUDALIGE DONA ANNE ARUTHNIE JAYAMAHA recommended The Diary of Anne Frank and shared her thoughts about love. Moroccan student CHAIMAA AAYALE introduced her different achievements while reading The Little Prince in English and French. All participants shared their special understandings and thoughts on the books they recommended.
In the end of the activity, the Vice Dean of Foreign Language College and also the Judge, Mr. Ronggen SHI spoke highly of the students' excellent performance, admiring their profound contents and the novel perspective. Which impressed the judges the most is that many students presented their understandings in Chinese. At the same time, he expected that the foreign students could read more traditional Chinese books and looked forward to hearing their reflection on reading Chinese books.
Finally, according to the evaluation result, GIRIRAJ RADERAM and MAREETA NELLY DELYSZE OORLOFF won the first prize. CHAIMAA AAYALE, KALUWANAGE SHALINI SHALIKA JAYAWEERA, THABREW LAHIRU ARUNA SHAN HEMACHANDRA won the second prize and SADEEP HIRAN WEERAWARNA PATABENDIGE, MAHAMENDIGE PIYALKA NAVINDIE MENDIS, JAYAMAHA MUDALIGE DONA ANNE ARUTHNIE JAYAMAHA, JEHAN HARSHANA JAYATILLEKE, W DONA ROSEMARY JUDITH SOHANI SENEVIRATNE won the third prize.
Though the books recommended by the students are written in different languages, the happiness and enrichment achieved by reading are the same. The Reading Review Competition has become an important channel of constructing SIE cultural education, enhancing the students' humanistic quality and improving their Chinese skills.
