SIE Held Cross-cultural Chinese Speech Contest for International Students

On October 25, the Cross-cultural Chinese Speech Contest for International Students of School of International Education was successfully held in Jiangning Campus. Eight international students from Nepal, Pakistan, Yemen, Iran, Laos, Kenya, Burkina Faso and other countries participated in the contest, and relevant teachers from School of International Education, School of Foreign Languages and School of Marxism attended the event.


The theme of the Chinese Speech Contest is My Cross-cultural Communication Story, which aims to enrich the campus cultural life of international students, improve their Chinese expression ability and cultivate their cross-cultural awareness and cross-cultural communication ability.

Eight contestants talked about the problems or interesting stories they encountered in cross-cultural communication and shared their insights and feelings around this theme, expressing the concept of cross-cultural communication that although there are differences between different cultures, the world will become a better place with mutual respect and understanding. The speeches of the contestants were either fluent and vivid, or with beautiful voices and sincere feelings, winning applause from time to time.


Finally, according to the comprehensive score of the judges, Muhammad Zunair Bhatti, a master student of Class 2021, won the first prize, Frankline Koome Gikunda and Abib Fawzia Sawadogo, undergraduates of Class 2020, won the second prize, and Kimia Kheirandishdoolabi, Hanadi Abdulwahid Ahmed Qaid Al-Magedi, undergraduates of Class 2021, Sushant Shrestha, undergraduate of Class 2020, won the third prize.

Pro. Xiang Juqian from the School of Foreign Languages and Pro. Jiang An from the Chinese Teaching and Research Department of the School of Marxism commented on the contest. They affirmed the wonderful and vivid expressions of the contestants in their speeches, as well as their understanding and thinking about cross-cultural communication, and also made targeted suggestions on the shortcomings of the speeches.


Muhammad Zunair Bhatti (first prize winner), Frankline Koome Gikunda and Abib Fawzia Sawadogo (second prizes winners) will represent the international students of our university to participate in the 4th Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press Cup Intercultural Competitions for Students from Universities in Yangtze River Delta Region and the National Invitation Competitions (Jiangsu Region). We wish them excellent results in the Jiangsu provincial competition.
