On the afternoon of April 3rd, the Reading Classic Works, Seeing the Future----2024 Spring Reading Review Competition of SIE was successfully held in Lecture Hall D002 of Xuehai Building, organized by the School of International Education. Prof. Ding Haiyan, Vice Dean of School of International Education;Ms CangWei, Director of Student Affairs Office at the School of Biomedical Engineering and Informatics; Ms Cheng Qingman, Director of Student Affairs Office at the School of Foreign Languages; Mr Shenhenglu, Director of Student Affairs Office at the School of International Education and Ms Zhao Yilan, Deputy Director of Student Affairs Office at the School of International Education attended the event.
The book report event attracted 10 groups of participating students, each presenting a colorful world of knowledge and wisdom intertwined, culture and thought colliding with unique perspectives and vivid language. The wisdom of governance reflected in The Governance of China, the mysteries of the universe displayed in Three Bodies, and the yearning for freedom and education in I am Malala are all like windows, allowing us to glimpse the charm of different worlds. Works such as Life Color, The Alchemist, and Journey to the West, with their unique charm, lead us to shuttle between reality and fantasy, experiencing the colorful and profound nature of life. The recitation of poetry in “The Dream of the Red Chamber”, as well as the cultural insights brought by “The Traditional Chinese Medicine in the United States” and “The Analects”, all make people feel the power and charm of reading. Finally, Being Mortal, with its profound exploration of end-of-life care, not only prompts us to reflect on the meaning of life, but also makes us understand the importance of dignity and choice in the final stage of life, revealing a profound world about life and death, love and separation
The participants were passionate and persuasive, sharing their recommended books with unique insights and perceptions, earning them thunderous applause from the audience.
At the conclusion of the event, Prof. Ding Haiyan, Vice Dean of School of International Education, who served as the head of the judging panel, provided feedback and expressed higher expectations for the students. She highly praised the wonderful presentations shared by the international students, emphasizing that the content and the presenter's demeanor, especially confidence, are the most crucial aspects of a presentation. She also encouraged the international students to delve deeper into Chinese classical literature, hoping to hear about their future achievements from reading such works.
Through this event, international students have come to a profound realization that reading is not just about acquiring knowledge but also a key to understanding the world. The event has provided a platform for cultural exchange and sharing, aimed at enhancing the cultural literacy of international students and further encouraging them to develop the habit of engaging with literature regularly and discerningly. This will contribute to broadening their horizons, enriching their knowledge, and enhancing their academic and overall competence.
