The School of Public Health (SPH), Nanjing Medical University (NJMU), traces its root to the Department of Public Health at the National Jiangsu Medical College in 1940s as one of the earliest professional training programs in public health and preventive medicine education in China. The SPH has MOE (Ministry of Education) Key Laboratory of Modern ToxicologyJiangsu Province Key Laboratory of Cancer Biomarkers and Prevention and Jiangsu Collaborative Innovation Center for Cancer Personalized Medicine (Foster), which are part of the State Key Laboratory of Reproductive Medicine. Preventive medicine is awarded as a Famous Brand Discipline of Jiangsu Province, a Characteristic Discipline construction site of the Ministry of Education and is also a national innovation experimental area for personnel training model. Preventive medicine teaching team has been selected as a national teaching team. The SPH has built National Preventive Medicine Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center, Jiangsu Public Health Practice Education Center, the national excellent course of Toxicology, national excellent resource-sharing course of Toxicology and national bilingual demonstration course of Epidemiology. The discipline of Public Health and Preventive Medicine in our school ranked the third in the national first-level discipline overall rankings announced by the Ministry of Education in 2012.


     Currently, the SPH comprises eight departments (Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Occupational Medicine and Environmental Health, Nutrition and Food Hygiene, Maternal, Child and Adolescent Health, Toxicology, Hygiene Analysis and Detection, Social Medicine and Health Education),  four centers (Experimental Teaching Center of Preventive Medicine, Teaching and Research Center of Public Health, Jiangsu Human Drug Veterinary Medicine and Pesticide Safety Evaluation and Research Center, Public Health Emergency Counseling Service and Research Center) and one platform (Research Sharing Platform). There are 142 faculties, of whom 93 are full-time teachers including 26 professors, 25 associate professors and 42 lecturers. Among them, there are 19 doctoral tutors and 34 master tutors.

     The SPH has more than 700 undergraduate students and about 500 graduate and doctoral students, forming a multi-disciplinary, multi-level training system based on preventive medicine, with coordinated development of related disciplines. The school also places great importance on expanding social technology services which brings a sharp characteristic predominance of coordinated development of production, teaching and research.
